What is concussion?

Concussion is a hot topic in sport at a national and local level. Do you really know what a concussion is?

A concussion is a brain injury that results in a disturbance of brain function.

It affects the way a person thinks, feels, and remembers things.

Concussions can occur in a variety of ways - from a collision with another person or object, or when forces are applied anywhere on the body and then transmitted to the head and brain.

It should be noted that concussions can occur as a result of relatively minor knocks.

Concussions do not always present as a blackout or altered state of consciousness. In fact, they are rarely associated with loss of consciousness.

A concussion may not be immediately obvious and therefore may not be easily recognised.

That is why the saying, “when in doubt, sit them out,” is crucial to apply in on-field scenarios.

Concussion is often an evolving injury, where symptoms can develop over several hours or even days following the initial injury.

Concussion can affect someone’s physical, cognitive, and emotional state, as well as their sleep and energy levels. Common signs and symptoms of concussion may include:

🧠     Pressure in the head

🧠     Not feeling right

🧠     Fatigue or low energy

🧠     Drowsiness

🧠     Difficulty concentrating

🧠     Increased emotions

🧠     Increased irritability

🧠     Sadness

🧠     Nervousness/anxiety

🧠     Headache

🧠     Balance problems

🧠     Dizziness

🧠     Blurred vision

🧠     Difficulty remembering

🧠     Neck pain

🧠     Feeling slowed down

🧠     Feeling “in a fog”

🧠     Confusion

🧠     Pale appearance

🧠     Dazed, blank, or vacant stare

Remember, these signs and symptoms can develop days later, which is why it is important for parents, teachers, and coaches to understand and recognise them.

If you suspect a concussion in yourself or someone you know, clearance from a trained healthcare practitioner is required.

The physiotherapists at Good Country Physiotherapy are able to assist with management of concussion and provide appropriate assessment and return to school/work/sport guidance.
