Pilates and Clinical Pilates: what is the difference?

Pilates is a type of mind-body exercise. It was named after Joseph Pilates who developed a series of exercises in the 1920s. Joseph Pilates also developed the well-known reformer, trapeze table and wunda chair which are pieces of equipment used to perform Pilates exercises. Pilates has remained a popular form of exercise, with a strong focus on controlled movement and breathing.

What is Clinical Pilates?

Clinical Pilates applies the principes and/or movements of traditional Pilates to the management and treatment of a range of conditions. This may include the treatment of pain or injury.

To be classified as Clinical Pilates, exercises need to be individualised to your strengths, weaknesses and goals. As physiotherapists are trained in the assessment and management of musculoskeletal conditions, they are well versed in developing clinical exercise programs, including Clinical Pilates.

Advantages of Clinical Pilates

·         It is often claimable through private health insurance

·         It is specifically designed to help you achieve your goals.

·         When delivered well, it should be structured and progressive so that as you improve, you continue to be challenged.

·         When completing clinical Pilates in one of our classes, you will have access to the Pilates machines (reformer, trapeze table and wunda chair) which can be used to make exercises easier or more challenging.

How can I participate in Clinical Pilates?

The first step is to have an assessment with a physio to discuss your pain/injury/goals.  An exercise program can then be designed to meet these goals.

You may choose to attend a class on a regular basis where you can be supported to complete a program with supervision of a qualified and Pilates trained physio.

You may instead (or additionally) choose to complete a home program of Clinical Pilates exercises.

Non-clinical Pilates

If you want to participate in Pilates but don’t have private health cover, want a lower price point, or are attending for general exercise rather than a specific goal, then non-clinical Pilates may be more suited to you. This is a more generic form of Pilates, where all participants generally perform the same exercises, sometimes with variations in level of difficulty depending on the exercise and the individual.  Good Country Physiotherapy offer mat Pilates classes each term in Naracoorte, Bordertown, Keith and Padthaway.
