Going on holiday? How to carry your bags... and other holiday injury prevention tips

With Christmas fast approaching, the holiday season is now in full swing. With that comes travelling (trains, planes and automobiles). To decrease the risk of injury while you're away on your summer travels, here are some simple tips:

  1. Keep your suitcases at a reasonable weight (no more than 20kg!)

  2. When lifting your suitcase:

  • bend your knees

  • push through your strong leg muscles

  • keep the weight close to your body

  • keep the amount of lifting to a minimum.

  • Invest in a suitcase with wheels

  1. Don't sit in the car for more than 1-2 hours without getting out for a stretch and walk. Don’t take a rest from sitting in the car by sitting in the coffee shop for 20 mins!!!

  2. Keep your fluids up - water that is!

  3. Enjoy the summer weather. While any increase in activity is great, aim for 20 minutes of walking/ exercise every day. Make an investment in your heath over the summer.

  4. Relax, unwind, have a laugh - it's the best medicine for all your aches and pains!

  5. Look after your feet. To avoid the risk of foot pain make sure you have comfortable supported footwear in the hot weather. If you do go for barefoot walks on the beach, be careful to gradually build the distances up.

All of the staff at Good Country Physiotherapy wish you, your family and friends a safe and happy festive season. Drive safely and enjoy every minute!
