London Olympics, Here I Come!!
09-Feb-2012Some of you may have heard that Good Country Physiotherapy director, Angela Dunsford, has been selected as a physiotherapist for the London Olympic Games. Provided her registration is approved in England, she will be heading over in mid-July to work at the Athletes' Village, treating athletes from any country and any sport. This sees the fulfilment of a lifelong dream for Angela, who has been working towards this goal for the last five years.
"It was the main reason that I went to Adelaide to complete my Masters in Sports and Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy in 2010", she said. "The Olympics won't take physios with less than a Masters qualification so it was vital that I had that, as well as experience with sporting teams".
"I am very excited about working at the Olympics and achieving a major career goal", Angela said.
Angela will be working in a voluntary capacity and has to fund her own flights, accommodation and food.
"There are no paid employees at the Olympics. Even many of the Australian team physios are volunteers", she said. "It's all about the experience, which will be something else, so it is worth all the expense".
In preparation for the Games, Angela will be working at the British Swimming Championships at the London Olympic Swimming venue in March this year. This coincides with her trip to England with the Brighton Chiefs Invitational Rugby Union tour of England and Wales. She departs for England on 18th February for a two week tour which includes 3 games of rugby and 10 training sessions. She will be the only physiotherapist for 35 under 20 and under 18 players.
"It's going to be a busy couple of weeks. Hopefully the weather holds out - it's snowing where we are playing at the moment", she said. Quite a change from the Australian summer weather!
We wish Angela all the best with her travels in the coming month.
