What is the Sacroiliac joint (SIJ) ?
The SIJ is right at the bottom of your back. You have one joint on each side. It is where the sacrum joins the ilium (pelvic bone). These joints allow twisting movements when we move our legs so to take some of the load off our pelvis. Problems can arrive when the joints become ‘locked’ or have a lack of movement (stiff). Problems can also arise if there is too much movement in the SIJ.
What are symptoms of SIJ dysfunction?
- Pain in the very low back to the right or left side
- Possible buttock or leg pain
- Dull ache or catching pain
- Pain with activities such as putting shoes/socks on, rolling over in bed, getting in out of the car, walking
Causes
- Trauma
- Pregnancy/Hormonal
- Muscle imbalance
- Inflammation
What can you do about it?
Avoid doing activities that aggravate it and see your physio. We have a range of treatment techniques that can help. GCP physiotherapists are trained in assessing pelvic dysfunctions and using muscle release or muscle energy techniques to correct your SIJ issues. In some cases, wearing an SIJ or pelvic belt may also help.
How can you prevent it returning?
Exercise rehab is a great way to make a difference long term. Doing pilates exercises, or specific exercises given to you by your physio or going to the gym can all help.
